History

St. Patrick's Breastplate

The text “I bind unto myself today” is by Cecil Frances Alexander (1818–1895), who in 1889 versified in English an ancient Irish prayer attributed to Saint Patrick, the “Lorica” or “Deer's Cry”. The melody is traditional Irish and was harmonized by Charles Villiers Stanford (1852–1924) in 1902.

About the piece

A prayer of protection that invokes the Trinity, the angels and Christ at every moment of life. This edition carries the melody with its text, in 113 measures in 3/4, with all the verses.

How to prepare it

It is a long piece of intermediate level. Its range is B♭3–D5 (a major tenth). The hard part is stamina: there are many verses, so share the effort (for example, alternating verses between the choir and the assembly). Rehearse the text in parts to memorize it well, and keep a slow, firm pulse that doesn't speed up toward the last verses.

When to use it

Sung in Ordinary Time, and traditional around the feast of Saint Patrick (March 17).
