History

Heilig, heilig, heilig — Deutsche Messe (Schubert)

Franz Schubert (1797–1828) composed the “Deutsche Messe” (D 872) in 1827, a Mass in German for the whole assembly to sing, with text by Johann Philipp Neumann (1774–1849). The “Heilig” is its Sanctus.

About the piece

The “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord”, in German. The edition carries the melody with its text, in 32 measures in 3/4.

How to prepare it

The melody is very simple, E♭4–C5 (a major sixth), and was conceived for an assembly without musical training. The most important thing is the continuous phrasing over the 3/4 meter: sustain the long notes of the “heilig” without accenting each repetition and breathe only at the end of phrases. Rehearse the German spoken, taking care that the final consonants are clean but not hard.

When to use it

A piece for Ordinary Time, as a Sanctus in a Mass sung in German or in celebrations with a German-speaking community.
