History

¡Santo! ¡Santo! ¡Santo! (NICAEA)

The tune NICAEA is by John Bacchus Dykes (1823–1876), from 1861, and the original English text is by Reginald Heber (1783–1826). The Spanish version used here is the translation by Juan Bautista Cabrera (1837–1916), widely used in Hispanic churches.

About the piece

The hymn of praise to the Trinity, “¡Santo! ¡Santo! ¡Santo!”, in Spanish. This edition carries the melody with its text, in 35 measures.

How to prepare it

The melody is simple and its register is comfortable, D4–E♭5 (a minor ninth). When singing it in Spanish, watch the stressed syllable of each word: it should coincide with the strong pulse of the measure. Rehearse with the text spoken in the rhythm of the melody before singing it. The tempo should be solemn but moving forward, without dragging.

When to use it

A very suitable entrance chant for Ordinary Time and especially for the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.
