History

God Is Our Refuge, K. 20 (Mozart)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) composed “God Is Our Refuge” (K. 20) in London in 1765, at the age of nine, during his family's tour of Europe. It is one of his few works with an English text, and he presented it that year to the British Museum.

About the piece

A short four-voice motet in English on trust in God as a refuge. The edition, 23 measures in 3/2, carries soprano, alto, tenor and bass.

How to prepare it

It is an intermediate piece with clear writing and very clean harmony. The ranges are manageable (sopranos F4–E♭5 (a minor seventh), altos B♭3–C5 (a major ninth), tenors F♯3–G4 (a minor ninth), basses G2–B♭3 (a minor tenth)). Because the texture is transparent, any tuning imprecision can be heard: rehearse the chords slowly and listen to the vertical intonation. Mind the 3/2: three broad pulses, with soft accents.

When to use it

It works very well in Ordinary Time as a piece of thanksgiving or offertory, and in concerts presenting Mozart's early repertoire.
