History

Jesus Christ Is Risen Today (EASTER HYMN)

The tune EASTER HYMN appeared in London in 1708 in the collection “Lyra Davidica”, with the anonymous text “Jesus Christ is risen today”. Years later Charles Wesley used the same tune for “Christ the Lord is risen today” (1739), and both are often sung together.

About the piece

The Easter hymn par excellence in English, with an “Alleluia” at the end of each line. This edition carries the melody with its text, in 16 measures.

How to prepare it

The melody has an extent of C4–E5 (a major tenth), somewhat wide for an assembly, and the final “Alleluia” of each line has long notes that must be held firmly. So that no energy is lost, stagger the breaths: the assembly breathes at the end of each line and the cantors within the “Alleluia” in a staggered way.

When to use it

An ideal entrance and closing chant for Easter Sunday and the whole of Eastertide.
