About the piece
A setting of Psalm 23 (“The Lord is my shepherd”) in four voices, in the style of a colonial hymn. The edition, 28 measures in 2/2, carries soprano, alto, tenor and bass.
How to prepare it
It is a piece of moderate level and clear texture, almost hymn-like. The ranges are wide for an assembly but comfortable for a choir: sopranos E4–F♯5 (a major ninth), altos A3–B4 (a major ninth), tenors E3–F♯4 (a major ninth) and basses A2–C♯4 (a major tenth). Rehearse each line with the text first, then work on balance: in a texture like this the lower voices support and the melody must stand out without being forced. The tempo should let the text be understood without hurry.
When to use it
Very suitable for funerals, for Ordinary Time and as a communion chant, for the trust the psalm expresses.
