History

Panis angelicus (César Franck)

César Franck (1822–1890) composed “Panis angelicus” in 1872 and inserted it into his “Mass for three voices”. The text is a stanza from the hymn “Sacris solemniis” by Saint Thomas Aquinas for the feast of Corpus Christi.

About the piece

A chant of adoration to the “bread of angels”, the Body of Christ, in Latin. This edition, 61 measures long, carries the solo soprano and solo tenor parts.

How to prepare it

It is a solo with a long, smooth line and a wide range. The soprano spans G4–E5 (a major sixth) and the tenor E4–E5 (an octave). Work on breath control and the softness of the high notes. Learn the Latin text first, taking care with the pronunciation of “panis angelicus” and “res mirabilis”, then pursue the legato.

When to use it

A very common piece for communion, Eucharistic adoration, weddings and the solemnity of Corpus Christi.
