History

Down to the River to Pray

“Down to the River to Pray” is a traditional spiritual that appears in print in 1867 in the collection “Slave Songs of the United States”. It speaks of going down to the river to pray and of the promise of receiving a crown.

About the piece

A calm, contemplative spiritual with a melody that invites recollection. The edition carries the melody with its text, in 16 measures.

How to prepare it

The line moves in C4–E♭5 (a minor tenth), a moderate range any assembly can reach. It is sung unhurried, with long phrases and a quiet tempo. Rehearse the dynamics: start almost whispered and let the volume grow naturally with each verse. Because the melody is so simple, most of the work is about breath and silence: decide where the whole choir breathes and rehearse it until no one is left behind.

When to use it

It works well in Ordinary Time, as a meditation chant after the readings or during communion.
