History

Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod)

Charles Gounod (1818–1893) composed this melody over the Prelude in C major by J. S. Bach (BWV 846, from “The Well-Tempered Clavier”) and published it in 1859 with the Latin text of the “Ave Maria”. It is one of the pieces most often sung at weddings.

About the piece

An “Ave Maria” for solo voice whose line flows over the constant arpeggio of Bach's prelude. This edition carries only the vocal line, in 40 measures.

How to prepare it

The melody demands breath control: it spans A3–F♯5 (a major thirteenth), with long phrases that must be sustained without breaking. Practice each phrase in a single breath and approach the top note with a relaxed mouth, without pushing. Work the Latin calmly: the clarity of “gratia plena” and “benedicta tu” is part of the effect.

When to use it

A classic at weddings, but also sung as a prayerful moment at communion and at Marian celebrations in Ordinary Time.
