History

Alleluia! Sing to Jesus (HYFRYDOL)

The words are by William Chatterton Dix (1837–1898), published in 1866. The tune HYFRYDOL (Welsh for “pleasant”) was composed by the Welsh musician Rowland Hugh Prichard (1811–1887) around 1830 and appeared in print in 1844; today it is sung to many other texts.

About the piece

A Eucharistic hymn praising Jesus present in the sacrament, with an alleluia in every verse. This edition carries the melody with its text, in 32 measures in 3/4.

How to prepare it

The melody is very singable and is learned quickly; its register is comfortable, F4–D5 (a major sixth). Watch the phrase endings: singing them softly keeps the hymn from getting heavy in triple meter, and always breathe in the same places so the assembly can follow you. It is a good starting point for choirs beginning to sing in parts, because the main line is already so clear.

When to use it

It works in Eastertide and, above all, for the communion procession and Eucharistic celebrations (Corpus Christi, adoration).
