History

Christ Is Risen! (Sullivan)

Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900), famous for his operettas with W. S. Gilbert, also composed many hymns. “Christ Is Risen” sets to music an Easter text by Archer Gurney (died 1887) and is sung during Eastertide.

About the piece

An Easter hymn that proclaims the resurrection of Christ. This edition carries the melody with its text, in 25 measures.

How to prepare it

The melody spans exactly an octave, E4–E5 (an octave), and requires an assembly with some experience of high notes. Prepare the entrance into the high register with breath, without forcing, and rehearse the alleluia refrain until the whole assembly enters in unison. Set a clear, lively pulse, appropriate to Easter joy, and keep the diction crisp so the Easter text can be understood.

When to use it

An entrance and closing chant for Easter Sunday and the whole of Eastertide.
