History

Sanctus — Misa XVIII

The Sanctus of Mass XVIII (“Deus genitor alme”) belongs to the Kyriale, the book of Ordinary chants of the Mass in Gregorian chant. This Mass is traditionally assigned to the seasons of Advent and Lent, because of its sober character.

About the piece

The “Holy, Holy, Holy” in Latin, with the text of Isaiah 6:3 and the “Hosanna”. The edition has only 7 measures, written in modern notation.

How to prepare it

It is sung in unison and unaccompanied, with a free rhythm that follows the text. Its range is small, E4–C5 (a minor sixth), so any assembly can sing it easily. Rehearse the Latin spoken, with clear vowels (“Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth”), and then the melody. Being so brief, it is a good exercise for working on the joint start and unison tuning.

When to use it

It is the Sanctus proper to Advent and Lent, though it can be sung at any time of the year.
