History

Praise Him! Praise Him!

The words are by Fanny Crosby (1820–1915), one of the most prolific hymn writers of her time, who lost her sight as an infant. The melody is by Chester G. Allen (1838–1878) and was published in 1869.

About the piece

A joyful, direct hymn of praise with a repeated refrain that is easy to memorize. The edition carries the melody with its text, in 33 measures in 6/8.

How to prepare it

The range is comfortable, D4–D5 (an octave), and it is a very singable melody. Rehearse the 6/8 as two long pulses and let the energy come from the articulation of the text, not from volume. Since the piece is 33 measures long, rehearse it by phrases and clearly mark the repetitions of the refrain.

When to use it

A praise chant for Ordinary Time: it works as an entrance chant or one of thanksgiving.
