History

Nuptiae factae sunt (antífona de bodas)

“Nuptiae factae sunt” is a Gregorian antiphon whose text comes from the Gospel of John (2:1–2): “There was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and Jesus was invited with his disciples”. The melody is medieval.

About the piece

A short Latin antiphon recalling Jesus' first sign at the wedding at Cana. The edition, only 9 measures long, carries a single line in modern notation.

How to prepare it

It is sung in unison and unaccompanied. In this edition the melody is written in a low register (C3–B3 (a major seventh)), so you can transpose it to the pitch that best fits your choir. Rehearse the Latin spoken first, with open vowels, then the melody with a free rhythm that follows the stress of the words.

When to use it

A natural piece for weddings, and it can also be sung at communion at Masses in which the Cana gospel is read.
