History

Tochter Zion, freue dich (Händel)

“Tochter Zion, freue dich” (“Daughter of Zion, rejoice”) is an Advent hymn with a text by Friedrich Heinrich Ranke (1798–1876), from 1826, sung to a melody by George Frideric Handel taken from his oratorio “Judas Maccabaeus” (1747), the one from the chorus “See, the conqu'ring hero comes”.

About the piece

A hymn that announces the king's arrival in Jerusalem, closely tied to Advent. The edition, 16 measures long, carries the four voices (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) and the text in German.

How to prepare it

The melody has a festive character and is sung at a firm pulse. The ranges are comfortable: sopranos F♯4–G5 (a minor ninth), altos D4–B4 (a major sixth), tenors A3–F♯4 (a major sixth) and basses C♯3–D4 (a minor ninth). Since the harmony is simple, it is a good piece for starting to sing in four parts: rehearse the soprano line first with the whole choir and then divide the voices. Practice the German aloud before singing it, syllable by syllable.

When to use it

A natural entrance chant in Advent, especially on the first Sunday.
