History

The Gladness of Thy Motherhood (Te gestientem gaudiis)

“The Gladness of Thy Motherhood” is the English version of the Latin hymn “Te gestientem gaudiis”. The melody comes from the “Cantarium S. Galli” (1845, according to our source) and the translation is by O. Hunter-Blair, published in 1912.

About the piece

A Marian hymn celebrating the joy of the Virgin's motherhood. This edition carries the melody with its text, in 49 measures.

How to prepare it

The melody moves in E♭4–C5 (a major sixth), a very comfortable register for the whole assembly. Since it is longer than other simple hymns (49 measures), rehearse it by phrases and mark the start of each verse clearly. Its character is calm praise: sing clearly, without harshness, and give the final syllable of each line its full value so the verse breathes.

When to use it

Suitable for feasts of the Virgin and for Ordinary Time, as an entrance or closing hymn.
