History

Kyrie — Missa tertii toni (Rodrigo de Ceballos)

Rodrigo de Ceballos was a Spanish sixteenth-century composer who died around 1581. This edition comes from a source preserved in the colonial music archive of Guatemala, evidence of how Spanish Renaissance polyphony travelled to the Americas.

About the piece

The Kyrie of a Mass “tertii toni”, that is, composed in the third church mode. The edition, 31 measures long, carries soprano, alto, tenor and bass.

How to prepare it

This is Renaissance-style polyphony, where each voice has its own line and enters by imitation. The ranges are moderate: sopranos G4–F5 (a minor seventh), altos A3–C5 (a minor tenth), tenors A3–G4 (a minor seventh) and basses C3–C4 (an octave). Rehearse each voice separately until it can sing its line independently, then add the entrances one by one. The key is to listen to the other voices and keep a shared pulse.

When to use it

It fits Lent and Ordinary Time, as the Kyrie of a Mass in Latin or as repertoire for a solemn celebration.
