History

And Can It Be (SAGINA)

The words are by Charles Wesley (1707–1788), written in 1738, soon after his conversion. The tune SAGINA is by Thomas Campbell and was published in 1825. It is one of the best-known hymns of the Methodist tradition.

About the piece

A hymn of wonder at the love of God that sets people free, with an energetic, flowing melody. This edition carries the melody with its text, in 36 measures in 4/4.

How to prepare it

The melody is wide for an assembly: B3–E5 (an eleventh), with phrases that rise and fall quickly. Rehearse it in sections: learn the phrases first, then the repetition at the end of each verse, which is the hardest part to memorize. Keep the pulse steady and the diction clean; it is sung with joy, not with haste.

When to use it

It works very well in Eastertide and Ordinary Time, as an entrance hymn or as thanksgiving after communion.
