History

Amazing Grace

The words are by John Newton (1725–1807), a former slave-ship captain who became an Anglican priest; they were published in 1779 in the “Olney Hymns”. The tune NEW BRITAIN appears in print in 1829 in the American collection “Columbian Harmony” and is the one now linked to the text.

About the piece

The hymn of grace and of forgiveness received undeserved. This edition carries only the melody with its text, in 17 measures in 3/4.

How to prepare it

It is a pentatonic melody, easy to memorize, spanning just an octave: C4–C5 (an octave). What matters is the sway of the three-beat measure: feel the first beat of each bar and don't rush the long notes. In Cantico you can practice it at a slow tempo with the metronome until the assembly can sing it without the score.

When to use it

It is one of the most requested pieces for funerals and fits any Ordinary Time celebration, thanks to its calm and hopeful tone.
