History

All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name (CORONATION)

The words of “All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name” are by Edward Perronet (1726–1792) and appeared in 1779 in “The Gospel Magazine”. The tune CORONATION was composed by the American Oliver Holden (1765–1844) and published in 1793; its name refers to the crowning of Christ as King.

About the piece

A hymn of acclamation and praise that invites us to crown Christ as Lord of all. This edition carries the melody with its text, in 17 measures, in 4/4.

How to prepare it

The melody spans D4–E5 (a major ninth): the top note, E5, asks for a prepared entrance with breath rather than force. It is a hymn with a firm pulse: rehearse with a metronome so the assembly does not rush the energetic phrases. For the closing refrain, let the volume grow gradually.

When to use it

A natural entrance hymn in Ordinary Time, and for solemnities that proclaim the kingship of Christ.
